As one of the world’s leading specialty chemical companies, Clariant contributes to value creation with innovative and sustainable solutions for customers from many industries. Our portfolio is designed to meet very specific needs with as much precision as possible.
Location: Germany/ Straubing
Primary Feedstock: Lignocelluosic feedstock (wheat straw, corn stover, sugarcane bagasse and straw)
Products: Ethanol, lignin, vinasse, CO2 and cellulosic sugars
Technology: Enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation
Clariant’s entirely integrated sunliquid® process converts lignocellulosic agricultural residues into cellulosic ethanol or other biobased chemicals in a way that is highly efficient, economic and sustainable. The main process steps include chemical free pretreatment of the feedstock, enzymatic hydrolysis with Clariant’s own proprietary enzymes, that are feedstock-specific and produced process-integrated using the pre-treated feedstock as a substrate. Hydrolysis is then followed by efficient ethanol fermentation simultaneously, converting both C5 and C6 sugars into ethanol and subsequent energy efficient product purification.
Input Volume: 4,000 to 5,000 metric tons of straw
Output Capacity: 1,000 tonnes
Partners: Clariant has developed the sunliquid® technology on its own and is the sole owner of all IP related to the process.
